Reliance Jio is in talks with WhatsApp to create a special version of the popular messaging app for newly launched JioPhone, the company’s first 4G VoLTE feature phone, according to a latest report from Factor Daily. Both the companies are planning to introduce a toned-down version of WhatsApp on the feature phone.
The JioPhone runs on KaiOS, a forked version of the Firefox operating system. WhatsApp, which has a over 200 million users in India, doesn’t have a version that runs on the KaiOS and therefore the duo are in talks for a special version. The discussions between the Jio officials and WhatsApp officials still seem to be in its preliminary stage.
The JioPhone comes pre-loaded with a bunch of Jio Apps, including Jio Music, Jio Cinema and Jio TV. The phone is also said to include Facebook and YouTube apps.
The JioPhone packs a 2.4-inch QVGA display, is powered by Qualcomm 205 Mobile platform, has Alphanumeric keypad, 4-way Navigation key, microSD card slot, 2MP rear camera, torch light, FM Radio and NFC support. It also features voice commands to call someone, reject a call, browse internet, open apps and support 22 major Indian languages.
The JioPhone is effectively free, but to avoid misuse, the company is collecting Rs. 1500 as a security deposit, which will be refunded after 3 years. The beta testing of the Phone will begin from August 15th and the pre-booking for everyone through My Jio app and Jio retailer will be available from August 24th and shipping will begin in September in first-come-first serve basis.
