Qualcomm just announced Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platforms at its Snapdragon Tech Day event in Singapore. The all-new platforms are successors of last year’s Snapdragon 653 and Snapdragon 626 platforms, and are based on a 14nm FinFET process technology.

"Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 and 630 mobile platforms"

The Snapdragon 660 is the first processor in the lineup to come with Kryo CPUs that promises 20% better performance compared to Snapdragon 653 and it also has new Adreno 512 GPU that offers 30% better performance compared to Adreno 510. The Snapdragon 630, on the other hand uses the same Cortex A53 CPUs, but its arranged in performance and efficiency cluster arrangement, and the new Adreno 508 GPU on it offers 30% better performance compared to 506.

The Snapdragon 660 also has Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX) core for wide-vector processing and All-Ways Aware hub that runs on the Hexagon DSP so that it stays on at all times consuming very little battery life while collecting and processing information. The Snapdragon 630 comes only with All-Ways Aware technology.

Both the platforms have X12 LTE modem that offers download speeds up to 600 Mbps and peak upload speeds up to 150 Mbps, come with Bluetooth 5.0 support which doubles the amount of data that devices can transfer compared to the previous version, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 fast-charging support which can offer up to 5 hours of talk time in just 5 minutes of charging and up to 50% battery life in just 15 minutes of charging. It promises up to 20% faster charging and 30% higher efficiency than the previous generation Quick Charge 3.0.

Qualcomm stresses that both the new platforms support Qualcomm Mobile Security hardware-based protection and machine learning using the Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine SDK. They also bring the Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP, which supports hybrid autofocus, dual photodiode phase-detect autofocus (2PDAF), better electronic image stabilization for video, and enhanced low-light processing for still images. It can also handle dual-camera setups with Qualcomm’s smooth “optical zoom” feature when using two cameras with different focal lengths. It can also integrate data from both cameras to produce bokeh effects or to improve image quality.

Both are provide 4K video capture and playback capabilities, along with 8GB maximum memory and Vulkan API support. Additionally, the Snapdragon 660 mobile platform supports displays up to QHD (2K) resolution, whereas the 630 supports FHD/QXGA (1080p) resolution.
