ARM has taken the wraps off the next generation of its mobile CPU and GPU design. This includes the flagship Cortex-A75 CPU, mid-range Cortex-A55 CPU (First processors based on ARM DynamIQ technology), and the Mali-G72 GPU. These are the successors of Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 CPUs, and Mali-G71 GPU.

"ARM Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55"

These processors have dedicated instructions for AI (Artificial intelligence) performance tasks via DynamIQ technology, increased multicore functionality and flexibility in a single compute cluster with DynamIQ big.LITTLE, has ARM TrustZone technology and increased functional safety capabilities for ADAS and autonomous driving.

"ARM Cortex A75"

Highlights of ARM Cortex-A75 CPU:

  • Improves performance 20% over the Cortex-A73 when compared at same frequencies. Enables demanding applications to run more smoothly and provide a new baseline for even more complex workloads to be developed.
  • Targeted across a broad selection of markets, from edge to the cloud – it goes beyond mobile phones and laptop/clamshell devices, enabling new performance in network infrastructure, automotive designs, and potentially even servers.
  • Cortex-A75 can either be used standalone with up to 4 high-performance processors, or in big.LITTLE combination with the Cortex-A55 processor, with up to 8 processors total.  The choice of the final system will depend on the integrator (usually the silicon supplier) and depends on the tradeoffs between performance levels and cost.
  • Provides a significant boost in single thread performance that will benefit all markets. With over 20% more integer core performance when compared on same clock frequencies to last year’s CPU, Cortex-A75 provides a significant boost for a new generation of devices.

"ARM Cortex A55"

Highlights of ARM Cortex-A55 CPU:

  • Implements the latest ARMv8.2 architecture, pushes the boundaries on performance while maintaining the same levels of power consumption as the Cortex-A53.
  • Up to 2x more memory performance than Cortex-A53 at iso-frequency, iso-process, Up to 15% better power efficiency than Cortex-A53 at iso-frequency, iso-process, More than 10x more scalability than Cortex-A53
  • Delivers sustained performance for a significantly longer duration compared to today’s Cortex-A53 solutions, critical for user experiences in markets such as AR, VR and MR
  • Maintains the flexibility of Cortex-A53, with options such as NEON, Crypto and ECC (Error Correct Codes), but also introduces new, practical configuration options.
  • Includes advanced Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) features that allow it to service a wide host of markets, such as infrastructure and automotive.
  • Supports new heterogeneous CPU configurations, such as 1xCortex-A75 + 3xCortex-A55 (1b+3L) and 1xCortex-A75 + 7xCortex-A55 (1b+7L).

"ARM Mali-G72 GPU"

Highlights of ARM Mali-G72 GPU:

  • 1.4x expected in-device performance when compared to 2017 devices
  • 25% higher energy efficiency and 20% better area efficiency
  • Arithmetic optimizations and increased caches, reduces bandwidth for a 17% increase in machine learning efficiency
  • Multiple Bifrost optimizations including increased tile buffer memory, tiler scalability and L1 caches sizes
  • 40% more in-device performance overall
  • Increase in tile buffer memory allows the GPU to support more storage per active tile. This increases throughput in light loading situations as well as allowing greater utilization of Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) and Pixel Local Storage (PLS) and providing significant improvements to performance and visual quality.
  • Rebalanced execution engine data path removes rarely-used instructions and replace them with sequences of simpler instructions to reduce both area and power, lowering cost of implementation for our partners and increasing efficiency throughout the system.

These new mobile processors should start appearing in smartphones by the end of this year, and the ARM Mali-G72 GPU is expected in next year’s premium mobile devices.
